Well, I take those pretty pictures with a large spoon of salt.

Just one example; on November 8 2013, Arctic Ice extent DECREASED by over 30,000 square kilometres in just 24 hours!

Must have been one hell of a heat wave! Just kidding, it was a storm. Been lots of bad weather up there this winter and it tends to break up the ice and disturb the sea surface such that new ice cannot form as normal.

Her are the values for last two days in calmer weather:

The latest value: 14,035,877 km2 (February 20, 2014) increase = 100,795 km2

Been other reports that Arctic ice VOLUME was 50% up last summer at MELT peak.

Personally, my own belief is that exposed Arctic ocean INCREASES heat loss during winter. Heat gain during summer cannot compensate that loss because sun NEVER gets above much more than 40 degrees above the horizon.

Either way it's still looking a lot worse than last year at this time... Maximum looking to come in at one of the lowest on record.

Yes, I agree. It looks like the lowest ice extent record this century. I've been following it very closely (via the internet Wink ) and have noticed how the ice growth rate follows the weather pattern. The worse the weather, especially wind, the less ice. I suspect this is an effect of the jetstream that drove the lousy weather the Northern States of the USA and Canada are still experiencing.
Throughout this winter, so far, the Arctic air temperature records have remained well below freezing. As I've claimed before, I think the ice is an INSULATOR. The surface of the ice can follow the air temperature and get down to the -15s and more. Sea water surface cannot do this. But if the wind churns it up then it can't freeze.

Now just for fun, look up the difference in area between present ice coverage and the average over the last 20 years or whatever. Using Boltzmann calculate the INCREASE in energy loss from the water against how much would be lost from ice.

I don't trust my own figures but either way this is a HUGE loss of energy almost every year for at least the last 10 years. Can't find any reference to this in the global heat budget charts.

Whatever. I place my money on a cooling world and am preparing best I can.

ice surface temperature of -15C = 258K = outgoing radiation of 251 watts per square metre.
sea surface temperature of +2C = 275K = outgoing radiation of 324 watts per square metre.

Okay. My rough and ready figures above give 73 watts per square metre energy out from the sea. That is 73,000,000 watts per square kilometre per SECOND! Assume a difference in ice coverage of a million square kilometres that figure rises to 73,000,000,000,000 watts per second for 24 hours a day for possibly four months !!!

Clouds could modify that some but it will still be a huge energy loss. Far more outgoing energy than over Antarctica which is recording largest ice coverage ever. It is doing its best to keep the world warm. Smile

Remember, no sun at the North Pole until Equinox, still a month away.
